Fibre Fault Investigation and Repair in Eshowe

Fibre Repair

Restoring Reliable Connectivity Through On-Site Investigation and Precision Splicing

Reliable connectivity is critical for business operations, especially in areas where access to alternative infrastructure is limited. Recently, the Micro Division team was tasked with resolving a fibre connectivity issue in Eshowe, after a client reported consistent poor network performance affecting daily operations.

My mentor always say “Installation is the easy part, troubling shooting and finding a solution is the real skill.” and that was indeed the case. This project required not only technical expertise, but persistence, structured troubleshooting, and the ability to adapt to challenging on-site conditions.

Understanding the Problem

The initial report indicated poor and unstable connectivity at one of the client sites. Rather than making assumptions, our approach was to systematically investigate the fibre route and verify connectivity across multiple connected stores and points along the network.

By testing each location individually, we were able to:

  • Compare signal levels
  • Identify degradation points
  • Eliminate unaffected sections of the network

This step-by-step testing process was critical in narrowing down the root cause instead of applying temporary fixes.

Identifying the Fault Location

As testing progressed, patterns began to emerge, pointing to a fault further upstream on the fibre route. The next inspection point, however, presented a challenge โ€” the suspected fibre section was located several storeys high, well beyond safe reach using standard ladders or tools.

At this stage, it became clear that proper access equipment would be required to complete the repair safely and correctly.

Rather than rushing the job, the decision was made to:

  • Pause the repair
  • Arrange the correct access equipment
  • Return fully prepared to resolve the issue permanently

Preparation and Safe Access

The following day, our team returned to site with:

  • Scaffolding suitable for multi-storey access
  • A trailer to transport equipment
  • Full fibre splicing and safety gear

Working at height introduces additional risks, so safety and stability were prioritised before any fibre work began. Once the scaffolding was securely in place, we proceeded with detailed inspection of the fibre section.

Fibre Splicing and Repair

At approximately three stories high, the damaged fibre section was accessed and prepared for repair. Precision splicing was performed on-site to restore signal integrity across the affected links.

This process involved:

  • Cleaning and preparing fibre ends
  • Accurate alignment and splicing
  • Testing signal strength after repair
  • Securing and protecting the repaired section

Despite the challenging conditions, the repair was completed successfully and to standard.

Results and Outcome

Following the repair:

  • Connectivity was fully restored
  • Signal levels returned to acceptable ranges
  • The affected client experienced stable and reliable network performance

Final testing confirmed that the fault had been resolved and that the fibre link was operating as expected.

Key Takeaways from This Project

This project reinforced several important principles:

  • Thorough investigation prevents repeat faults
  • Proper equipment is essential for safe and lasting repairs
  • Rushing a repair often leads to future failures
  • Reliable connectivity depends on attention to detail, even in difficult environments

Closing Thoughts

Fibre infrastructure repairs often require more than just technical knowledge โ€” they demand patience, adaptability, and a commitment to doing the job properly. This Eshowe repair is a good example of how structured troubleshooting and professional execution can restore critical connectivity, even under challenging conditions.

If your organisation requires fibre fault investigation, repair, or network support, our team is equipped to deliver reliable solutions in both urban and rural environments.
